Issues to watch 30.7.13 Yep, Pesticides ARE Killing Bees. A new report released by the USDA this week has confirmed that bee decline can be attributed to a number of issues including parasites, disease, poor nutrition and…surprise, surprise pesticides. They didn’t go as far as to say neonicotinoids are responsible, but, they are having to admit, that because of a growing body of evidence, pesticides ARE wreaking havoc on the tiny pollinator. Researchers found 35 different pesticides in pollen, including neonicotinoids, and of these, the most common chemical found was the fungicide, chlorothanlonil, which is used to ubiquitously to protect apples and other crops. Apparently fungicides do not generally carry warning labels to tell farmers to refrain from application while crops are blossoming and bees are foraging, that is, when bees are most susceptible to pesticide poisoning. The study showed that honey bees cannot sustain regular exposure to the vast array of agricultural chemical combinations and that their immune systems are being destroyed. Sadly, researchers also found that pesticides were evident in every single pollen sample, even those that were collected from nearby wildflowers that were not sprayed. ecowatch/2013/pesticides-contributor-declining-honey-bees/
