It appears Judy is going to take on one last contract for designing and making a mold. Although I have a protege in Texas that I was hoping would take over where I left off, it seems he is too busy with his own art work. That means if anybody is going to pick up the slack in custom mold making, I need a new protege. A new trainee. Once youve learned the process, not only will I spread the news about the one who will take over, you will be able to offer your services all over the world. People just do not do custom molds without charging 2 arms and a leg, Im the only one who has ever been there for them, charging reasonable prices. That means youd be facing $40 jobs, $100 jobs and depending on the request up to $8000 jobs. Ive handled them all. It is a rarity to find a good mold maker, especially one who can take a description and design the model from the get go. As far as I know, Ive been the only one. So! Who wants to learn a new trade? I can teach you and you can always use my workshop but I guarantee youll be wanting your own work space which would require a work table, preferably hand built to custom for your height and the stool youll be using. Buckets for mixing plaster. A drill with a paint mixer blade. More but you can learn as you go. What Im saying is this can be a messy job and for you to have your own workspace requires a concrete floor or something easily swept and the area blocked off from the rest of your home because the mess doesnt belong on your couch. Im waiting for better description of the item this person wants before I take the next step. If youre wanting to become that student (protege) you will also have to help me clean up my mold area. One of the reasons I started telling people I could no longer do it was because of my back. If you get into it, be aware you will also need a way to transport 100# bags of plaster into your work area and will sometimes be lifting new molds as heavy as 60# Now you see what happened to my back. :) I was always a work-a-holic. Right now this offer is up for grabs but I think I should stick to only one student, as this is great extra income but not enough demand for too many. Its highly specialized work. Speak up, if this sounds good to you and willing to spend some time learning everything from drilling a customers mind for the right picture to start with, to designing the model , to making the mold and shipping it.
