It appears McDonalds have done some serious science reading this year... In January 2013 an article published by Independent Science News [Latham and Wilson] claimed that part of a common plant virus gene [historically safe in its unmodified natural DNA state] used in genetically engineered (GE) crops may be harmful to humans... -- Food Standards Australia & New Zealand Website In July 2013 Andrew Dewan, Yale School of Public Health, USA, edited a European funded study published on Public Library of Science Website. This study states complete foreign genes – and by extension, this includes genetically engineered genes – can and do pass from our consumed food into human blood. [This study] confirms our hypothesis that the presence of foreign DNA [from both natural and engineered food sources] in human plasma is not unusual. It shows large variation from subject to subject [according to the different diet patterns of patients] -- Spisák S, Solymosi N, Ittzés P, Bodor A, Kondor D, et al. (2013) Complete Genes May Pass from Food to Human Blood. PLoS ONE 8(7): e69805. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0069805 If McDonalds wont buy genetically engineered apples, they could also say no to the genetically engineered potato up for approval in America right now... I signed a petition telling the largest potato buyer of many countries — thats McDonalds — to promise not to buy these mutant potatoes and make McFrankenfries. If McDonalds decides not to buy them, theres a good chance farmers wont plant them in the first place. Even if you dont eat at McDonalds, putting pressure on them is the best way to keep GE potatoes off the market and off the shelves.
