It appears that things are falling apart again in Missouri because of the government insistence on being in control. After an unofficial curfew turned to violence, the government sent in their version of MLK to calm things down. Kiss a few babies, hug a few grandmas. Promises of the birth of a new day. The result was a night of peaceful protests. As it should be. After it was proven that protests can be peaceful without the need of a curfew, the government imposed an official curfew. (People cant just protest all night. Who will watch em? Weve got important things to do so knock it off by midnight.) Of course the problem with that is that people calm down at different rates. People had not finished protesting yet. Many people did not get the point of the protest in the first place. And they were right. The government buys all that cool stuff so that they can use it Evidently you are only allowed to be pissed off until midnight. Parents take note, even when the kids are good if they break curfew they need teargas and rubber bullets. The problem in the US is not race. It is the jackboot need to crush difference and individuality in the name of peace and order. The results is injustice. This system does not serve justice well enough, it is broken. While we work on tolerance we need a better way to communicate disapproval than through punishment, violence and pain. Race is just a part of the targeting and intensity mechanism of official violence. Difference is easy to spot when fuel is needed for violence. This is a big topic and we could throw in more variables.Lets throw gender into the mix. Meet Cece. She is young, black and, oh yeah, transgender. (Some of you will stop reading right about here, and that is why this dialogue is important.) Cece and friends are walking when they are verbally assaulted by a man and a woman outside of a bar. The woman attacked Cece with a beer mug without warning. Ceces face is sliced open but she wins the fight that ensues and leaves the scene. The man pursues her, attacks her, and is stabbed when Cece defends herself with a pair of scissors that were in her purse. The man dies, CeCe goes to prison. The girlfriend confessed to assault and gets six months. Read the story and read how gender prejudice and race prejudice work in our legal system. We dont need media to tell us what to think. Lets use media to share our thoughts. Im hosting a google video hangout on Wednesday, sometime between 10 AM and 3 PM EST.
