It gives me encouragement and a warm feeling in my heart to see that there are young medical professionals in Pakistan who are sensitive and professionally motivated to stand up to the recent activities of few members of our modern medico-political party YDA. Many years ago, I was invited to Malaysia for a three day conference on AFFECTIVE training of their medical doctors. Its, main focus was on professionalism. When I asked a senior health official in Kualalampur, why Pakistani doctors were invited? his reply surprised me. He said, Pakistan is a resource poor country and has lower statistics in literacy compared with us. Yet, we see their doctors are so successful and professional. They speak such good English and qualify so many international exams. Here in Malaysia, we know they maintain very high professional standards so we wanted to learn from them. I see the current DHARNA by YDA in front of SKM going on since six fellows in Pediatric Oncology were terminated en masse. This tragedy took place due to their ignoring repeated warnings and their demonstrations to reinstate their supervisor who was asked to leave SKM a month before they were terminated. First they demanded reinstatement of their supervisor. Then they defamed SKM and its MD and CEO and myself on TV. Then they put up a picture of current MD on a poster and put many inappropriate labels on his face. Then they started demanding that MD and CEO should be fired. Then they demanded a transparent Hire and Fire policy and decisions on merit. Then they accused SKM of misappropriation of Zakaat and spending Zakaat on personal pays of consultants. They used slogans such as. ye zakaat ka paisa hai, tumharay baap ka nahin MIND YOU! All this came step by step It breaks my heart to see what the current medical graduate and even undergraduate has become and is fast becoming in Pakistan. Our medical education is severely deficient in education of Professionalism. Our young doctors have no idea what are the demands of this profession? Being a doctor is a gift of ALLAH in addition to being a great responsibility. Doctors are supposed to be moral heroes. They swear to take care of patient FIRST. They swear to treat their medical colleagues as family I am going to write to all those in power in medical education to review their curricula for education in PROFESSIONALISM. We are MBBS degree holders. We must not defame this degree and out institutions. Medicine is probably one of the VERY FEW things still considered decent in Pakistan and abroad. Lets not give the world the idea that Pakistani doctors have no professional standards just like other professionals in Pakistan.............!! Lets join hands against non professionalism..........In Sha ALLAH!
