It has always been said that "nurses eat their young" and in this profession it is evident at times that this is true. Nurses who have been in the business of caring and taking care of individuals for a long period of time develop survival mechanisms to protect themselves from the hurt and pain of situations that occur on a regular basis in their job. When one of these situations arises and a seasoned nurse is being viewed and judged as non-compassionate and un-empathetic, the nurse has been through the process of crises repeatedly. If a nurse became emotional at every sad event that happened it is obvious that the nurse would not be able to perform his or her job effectively. No other nurse has the right or the need to judge another nurses compassion level especially those nurses who are new to the profession. This is one major problem that is present in the field and contributes to the nursing shortage and the dysfunction in the nursing body. Nurses who are new to the field will be able to develop their own defense mechanisms and how to deal with crisis and will learn not to judge other nurses for their work or their level of compassion. In reality, no one should ever have an opinion about someone else until they know the reasoning and facts behind the behavior. If an individual wishes to be a nurse and a productive and caring one at that, he or she should take advantage of what experienced nurses can teach and learn that the ability to judge other nurses has no place in the profession. Some nurses acquire their jobs in facilities by who they know not on their own merit; therefore feeling that they are safe to say or do what they wish which in turn causes trust to be broken and communication lines to be altered. Nurses deserve respect not only by the individuals they take care of but also from the other nurses in which they work with.
