It has been observed that the subject of federation is now the talk of the nation, relying on information from our reporters who have gone through the ways and wiles of this nation, a day does not pass without hearing about federation. However, even the dictionary of Politics by Florence Elliot and Michael Summerskill it is not silent on Federation. Federation is defined as A political unit on which a number of smaller political units devolve certain power over themselves and their citizens, and to which they usually entrust the conduct of their foreign affairs. The individual provinces or states, as they are often called, retain some control over their internal affairs, and in order that their rights should be clearly defined there is usually a federal constitution which allocates powers between them and the federal government. As disputes often arise as to the constitutional legality of executive decisions or laws made by the federal government, a supreme court is generally created to interpret the constitution. It is frequently provided that amendments to the constitution can be made only with the consent of a fixed number of the provinces or states...,based on this definition, we at The Observer do not see anything wrong on those who are advocating for federation in this nation of Malawi. Our sober admonition to those who are unleashing condemnation to the advocates of federation is this: in a demoratic dispensation, there is no strength of opposition and oppression which can stand against an idea whose time for fulfilment has come. From our observation there is something wrong in this nation whereby the solution is seemingly federation, having a referendum on whether to continue with unitary system of government or federation can be a stitch in time that can save nine and this can be fine for our malnourished democracy. There is something so wrong that has been happening for so long a time such that what is abnormal is perceived as normal. On the ground there is a system that weakens the strong in order to strengthen the weak. Those who are strong are tired of being weakened and they are saying it loud and clear; when we are afraid to fight for our rights, then we will ourselves be conqured... If we dont stop this system, our children and grand-children will ask us why we didnt have the courage to stop it before it did more harm?
