It has been said that the human brain is the most complex object in the universe. The number of possible states available to the average brain is greater than the number of elementary particles in the universe. Given the extraordinary capabilities and potential of the human brain, why do so many human lives revolve around utter trivia: sitcoms, soap operas, American Idol, gossip and games, celebrity obsession, fast food, fast cars and fast gratification, junk of every conceivable type? Shakespeare’s Prince Hamlet says: What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving, how express and admirable in action, how like an angel in apprehension, how like a god! In fact, how cheap and vulgar might be more accurate. We are a long way from Hamlet’s vision of humanity, but we can get there if we raise our gaze to the heavens rather than crawling around in the sewers like the banking pigs with their snouts permanently in the money trough.
