It has been such a crazy week here at K-E-W Dairy that Ive had a hard time catching up with posts. Last Sunday we classified the Brown Swiss and Ayrshires and were quite satisfied. Of the first calf Swiss that were classified, the results were 2 VG AND 4 G+. Second calf or older were 1 EX, 8 VG, 3 G+ and 1 G. The Ayrshire results 1 VG first calf heifer and 2 VG second or older. We have one Holstein that will be classified on Dec 7. Wednesday was herd health check. I dont have the paper in front of me, but of something like a dozen or more pregnancy checks, only 2 were open. We had 3 Ayrshire heifers dehorned that came to the farm with horns and 2 Angus/Swiss steers neutered. They are on for slaughter next year to provide our families with some fresh beef. Wednesday night delivered a Noreaster snow storm and Thanksgiving day brought a successful calving by the Red Holstein/Shorthorn with a little heifer and Friday 3am was a visit from the vet to deal with the twisted uterus on my Swiss heifer that finally calved with a live bull. (I just KNEW that storm would bring deliveries!) Friday afternoon I finally made it to USDA FSA for the MPP sign up. Head was swimming!! This morning (Saturday) we tested. Were on Vermont DHI/AP. Top cow was the Jersey/Holstein cross Ed bought from Moore Farm with her first test at 104 lbs. Lucas Swiss who just went EX was second high at 96 lbs with quite a few others in decent numbers. So with Kevin out of town for 3 days to visit family and Edward and me (Wendy) both wedging Thanksgiving time in with our families, it was a crazy week but a wonderful one. Feels so good to be dairying here in beautiful White Creek, NY!! Hope everyone has a great week as we swing into the Christmas season.
