It is 4:25 AM, and I hope to get a few hours of weighted typing in before we begin another busy day here. There are a number of new patients now, so the cast is constantly changing. We have two new stroke patients, and also some new joint replacement people--who are often housed on another wing. Man, those folks experience great pain, but they troop along. We all do! Still have a bit of double vision and nausea, so I will take it slow today. I got my butt kicked yesterday by some movements that tax balance, so I have to be very cautious about that. My body is a bit bashed from years of lifting, but the real problem is coordination--which is a complete mess. Still, many here are a lot worse off than me. I saw one of my friends break down a bit yesterday, and the memory pains me. Another patient got cranky with a spouse, and I got a bit miffed at someone--and made my angst quite clear. One can get so damn frustrated. I mean, the things some people take for granted, like picking up an object or climbing stairs or just talking a shower--they can become Herculean tasks. Life will never be quite the same for some of these people--or me, I guess. But my slide was gentle when compared with others. Imagine being in your early 20s and having a massive stroke. One day you are whole--the next you are fighting to do the simplest things. Not easy. We help and encourage each other as best we can. We gather for meals and talk, helping those with aphasia find the right words. Those folks have it rough. They know what they want to say, but have to fight for each and every word at times. The story of this place must be told, and perhaps that should be my next task--assuming I can maintain an ability to write. It would make quite a book. Hmmm...
