It is a huge problem when people give presentations on topics that they fundamentally do not comprehend. This following material illustrates the problem very clearly. Experts recognized in the field of gifted have often given presentations of Dąbrowskis work that are simply wrong or are confabulated with the work of Piechowski or others. This is from a YouTube video of a PowerPoint presentation given by Susan Daniels as a SENG webinar January 31, 2010 entitled Understanding overexcitabilities the joys and the challenges. Daniels is discussing overexcitability and says It has been decided would have been better translated as superstimulateability versus overexcitability for a couple of reasons – overexcitabilities has a connotation of over, too much, annoying, irritating, you know and all that. I would note the Dąbrowski chose the term deliberately and used it, in part, because excitability and inhibition are intrinsic terms associated with describing the operation of the neuron. Dąbrowski closely linked overexcitability with the neuron. She indicates that overexcitabilities are also known as OEs – or “original equipment.” This term was never used by Dąbrowski, it was introduced by Piechowski. She refers to the third factor as – essentially will. She then says the third factor is do you decide to activate your abilities and utilize your abilities and apply them, right? Suffice to say, this is not a third factor as Dąbrowski described it. Daniels gives a quotation in italics on her slide and says that “Dąbrowski said that Overexcitability permeates a gifted persons existence… And gives energy to their intelligence talents and personality.” Dąbrowski never said that. This is a quotation from page 35 of the book living with intensity written by Daniels and Piechowski. The most egregious comment in the presentation follows: “In terms of the challenges, we have to keep in mind that those challenges present sometimes for the individual and often times the overexcitabilities present more challenges for those in the life space or life sphere of the individual so, in other words, it bugs other people more than it does – it causes more challenges to others than to the individual who is highly overexcitable.” It is certainly clear that Dr. Daniels does not understand or experience overexcitabilities or she would realize that this quote is looking down the wrong end of the telescope.
