It is depressing to me that our seniors and interns, who do a lot of field placement hours, so often encounter teachers who are discouraging and negative about the profession. I know education is under attack, morale is low, and teaching is not an easy job. However, telling pre-service teachers, Run. Choose another profession, is selfish and short-sighted. If these young, enthusiastic, strong future teachers are defeated before they begin, who loses? -- Children who deserve fabulous teachers. I wont lie; as a teacher, I did my share of complaining. However, I would never have told someone trying to become a teacher to change professions because - even on my hardest, cried all the way home because I disagreed with the principal, every student had a bathroom accident, fire drill happened in the middle of perfect lesson, kid had a seizure during my observation, I had to waste valuable instructional time giving meaningless standardized tests, I was heading home to do paperwork for hours kind of day - I made a difference in my students lives. I dont advocate sugar-coating the fact that teaching is hard, but I wish practicing teachers could encourage pre-service teachers instead of tearing them down before they even begin their careers.
