It is discouraging and puzzling when my conservative friends demonstrate that they knowingly pretend they do not see the difference between leveling the playing field and making everyone equal. The absurdity of forcing humans to be copies of each other is then used to disparage the first objective -- ie, leveling -- something that is, potentially, within our reach to achieve or improve significantly. This conservative perspective (willing confusion I think) is very ironic since leveling INCREASES COMPETITION -- the very thing conservatives view as the essential ingredient of proper and constructive economic and social evolution. Resisting attempts to level the playing field is an action that REDUCES COMPETITION, not one that encourages it. This sort of willing or unwilling confusion is at the heart of the incoherent perspective of conservatives in our country. And another reason folks turn away from their world view. Imagine a world in which the massive number of children born into the underclass are raised, educated, housed and fed as well as their middle class counterparts (even half as well!) and the resultant SEVERE COMPETITION that would result. That would be a conservative Heaven -- not a conservative Hell. But of course, Cons are confused on those two notions as well...
