It is inevitable that in this format lots of information is going to be simplified. The trainers in the group do their best to help folks understand the basics of how to put behaviors on dogs, but we know that in some cases it wont be as simply as it sounds. Many pet owners are not aware of the process good trainers use to teach dogs, and thats because its not often demonstrated for them. Some trainers come up with simple sounding ways to achieve behavioral goals but these often fall short, in some cases because they are not based on good ideas to begin with. All in all its a challenge. Most dogs learn despite how we handle them not because of how we handle them. Our fearful dogs however often require better skills and understanding by their trainers. We will continue to do our best to point members in the right direction so they know which road to take with their dogs. Some members may need to find a guide to help them, one who is also on the right road. Every day, more and more of these trainers are emerging from the mish-mash of archaic training practices or seemingly new and novel approaches to training that have left solid training mechanics behind. We need to make it easy for our dogs to know exactly which behavior they are being reinforced for. Good trainers understand how to establish criteria, keep rates of reinforcement high, and use good timing when delivering it. It takes practice. Pet owners should insist on this from the training professionals they hire.
