It is possible to reduce stress by thinking more creatively about the tasks, events, people that CAUSE you stress. It is also possible to reduce stress by thinking more constructively about stress itself. However, as psychologist Winsome Thomas points out in response to the earlier posting, sustained stress can have extremely negative results, no matter how bravely you attempt to deal with it. So, it is vital to find a middle way here: reducing stress (anxiety, negative self-talk) that IS within your control, plus getting help to distance yourself inwardly or outwardly from any situations that threaten your well-being. Sharing the issues with someone less emotionally involved can bring a renewal of personal power. If the stress comes from a situation of grief or pain that cannot change, then the partial comfort of meaningful connections is also vital. So is taking in those precious vitamins for the soul: kindness, beauty, patience, appreciation, humour, genuine compassion for self and others...and, of course, courage. Paying close attention to the moments that are going well is almost absurdly helpful. As is speaking to and about yourself with respect - particularly when life is hard. Every day, a new beginning.
