It is quite unfathomable to me that this day has finally arrived. On this very day exactly a decade ago, I completed my sixth and final round of chemotherapy, which officially made me become a cancer survivor!! Again, it is unbelievable that a decade has already passed and all of the experiences I have been a part of have shaped this decade into quite a memorable one. This is the decade that not only made me into a better overall individual, but also shapes the path of my adoration for music and a music career. I never thought in my wildest dreams at the time that I would become immersed in drums and percussion and be where I currently stand today. All of these experiences, from being a part of various bands (such as Wasteland, Optic, Scattered Earth, and more) to being a live/session drummer for other bands (such as Martyrd, The Amatory Murder, and more) and has been nothing short of unforgettable and fun! In addition, I am thankful for making the wise decision of taking private lessons with a great drummer and teacher, Mr. Jeffrey Page, who also was and still is a huge inspiration in broadening my mind musically and about life in general. His teachings and open-mindedness have inspired me to always remain open-minded and to constantly hone my craft. I am also thankful and beyond honored that out of everyone he knew, he passed on his entire private teaching practice for me to take over and continue (inside joke for Jeff - I guess “giving everything a shot” really paid off in the end…). I am always grateful for the musicians I have collaborated with, networked with, and have met all over the globe. As for my band Optic, it always brings me this sense of happiness how hard we have worked to get to where we are and that we even recorded an EP and full-length album! That will always remain a milestone not only of this decade, but also throughout my entire life. Being able to attend the prestigious school, LIU Post – Long Island University, for music and music education has been nothing short of rewarding. The experiences, education, collaborations, friendships, and other connections will always hold a special place in my heart. Having graduated with both a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Music Theory and Composition are some of the greatest accomplishments ever to have come my way. In addition, having written a Master’s Thesis was a task I never thought would enter my life, but I completed it and it is now a published and acceptable source of research! And most importantly, I am eternally grateful for my family, friends, colleagues, teachers, and other acquaintances that have come into my life and/or have been with me since the very beginning. Your love, support, care, and experiences we have been a part of have made this decade more than memorable. There are no words I can easily write or say that describe this. The inspiration and positivity you have provided me with will always remain dear to me. I love every single one of you from the bottom of my strong-willed and courageous heart. And on that strong note, I finally have my first band teacher interview today (in a district I shall leave anonymous)! I feel more than prepared, but no matter the outcome of the interview, I always say to myself that I have overcome the worst and darkest period of my entire life. Regardless of what dark and dismal scenario comes my way, none of those will stand on a higher pedestal than this life changing experience. I plan on celebrating this event this upcoming weekend, but I am still unsure of the exact plan at the moment. But anyway, it shall be celebrated nonetheless!! Once again, I simply thank you all for everything. I love you all and I am looking forward to another grand decade!!! Yours truly, Scott Ronald Genovese
