It is sad that we are losing our appreciation of mystery. Just read that they are digging up the bones of a woman- IN A CONVENT, no less- to see if they can identify who the Mona Lisa is. The beauty of the Mona Lisa is that it is any woman who has ever beguiled a man- a first love, the girl next door, the woman you always wanted but could never have. It is a tribute to the feminity every woman possesses and so rarely gets to use in our world of speed dating, online dating, google, and total disclosure. At the moment, she is the essence of every woman- the part of a woman that makes her "other," different and intriguing to a man. If the Mona Lisa is identified- especially as this woman- then she becomes just a commissioned portrait of a dead noble woman who fled to a convent to seek treatment for syphilis, a tragic reminder of one life, rather than an inspiration for every life.
