It is that time of the year again –The SMC Past Captains’ Reunion Game! You might remember that, last season, a huge crowd was expected at Inverleith to watch Mike Crawley’s XV take on Ross McPhail’s XV. The Captains had finely honed their charges, the mince pies were heated and the mulled wine was brewing. Sadly, the weatherintervened and to huge disappointment throughout Edinburgh the pitch was declared unplayable. Undeterred, the Past Captains’ Committee is now planning this year’s occasion and has set the date for Saturday 28th December 2013 at Inverleith. It will be meeting soon to name the captains for this year’s match. Then under great secrecy, the teams will be chosen and the players informed of their selection by letter. It is a reunion game for school leavers (or young players involved in the club). For those unaware of the selection criteria: · It does not matter which team you played in at school. · Anybody who is at university or is of a similar age is welcome. Even if you have not been at Inverleith for a while please be assured you will receive a warm reception. If you have just left school and have been thinking about playing rugby again this would be an ideal opportunity to get involved. SMCFPRFC is looking forward to greeting as many people as possible at Inverleith. The club house will be open for drinks, food, mince pies and mulled wine and we hope that parents, girlfriends, brothers, sisters and friends, as well as watching, will join in the social event at the conclusion of the game. I am assuming that all those picked last year will be available for selection, unless of course, life has become tough and you are no longer a student! However, the gene pool must be extended and if you left school last year or you were unavailable last festive season then your name will also come into the reckoning! There might be a reason why you cannot take part. If so please send me a letter, signed by a parent or guardian, explaining the reason – only good explanations will be accepted! Seriously, I would be really grateful if you could confirm your availability to play, as soon as possible, with me at: [email protected] Equally, it would be really helpful if you would let me know if you cannot take part. Also, I do not have emails for everybody so please talk to your friends and get them to take part by contacting me at the above email address. We are hoping to make it a really festive occasion. To further the day, we are also organising a present Captain v Vice Captain’s game at the same time. Therefore, there promises to be a large crowd and a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new acquaintances. I look forward to hearing from you. Phil Waine
