It is the fall time to start getting your ebike ready for winter storage. Tips for putting your e-bike away in the fall The same as regular storage maintenance you do with a regular bicycle (Does it need repair, refit or replacement, letting a bit of air out of the tires, giving the chain and sprockets a good soaking with an appropriate lube), and now is always a good time to thoroughly clean the bike. There are a couple of extra things you should do for the electric. Check and make note of wiring for damage. Check all the connections clean and straighten if needed. Check the motor for any signs of overheating or other problems. Check the wheels for contact, drag issues, or other problems. Inspect each battery for any signs of physical issues and the connections to make sure they are tight, with no signs of corrosion or hot connections. Traditionally, the battery pack and connections are problem areas for e-bikes. Connections include the fuse and fuse holder, and other connections. Give the pack a full charge. You should turn off the main breaker, or remove the fuse, then you can remove the battery pack from the bike, if you require, to ensure there are no leaking currents that will drain the battery during the storage period. After fully charged, store the battery in a cool, dry place to help reduce self-discharge. Avoid leaving the batteries an area that will freeze. This can ruin the batteries. Keeping the batteries fully charged can minimize the risk of freezing, but it is not recommended. If the batteries are stored in a warm or hot area, eg: near a heat duct or heater, they will self- discharge much more rapidly and should be avoided. Once a month, especially for lead-acid batteries, give them a top-up charge. Use only the charger that is supplied with the bike. Please note, if the batteries take longer than 8-10 hours to charge you should stop charging and contact us, you could be damaging them from overcharging.
