It is time for me to re-read the Bible and the scholarly research - TopicsExpress

It is time for me to re-read the Bible and the scholarly research that surrounds it. I read the Bible as a teenager and then again reread excerpts in my early 20s but my immaturity, and purity as a thinker, led me to have great consternation as the numerous inconsistencies in the Old Testament and Gospels were discovered, pondered and then critically assessed. This experience, like no other, propelled me into a life of skepticism, cynicism, and questioning of established thinking and mores. Perhaps this path was a forgone conclusion for me but even the inevitable has a cascading moment. A little older now, I feel a renewed compulsion to better understand the most important book in human history. It has immeasurably shaped Western civilization and the world. It continues to serve as the bedrock for Western society. Without knowledge of the Bible any attempt to understand the world around us is severely impaired. Deeper, this is ultimately a search for self- an attempt to better understand the society in which I have grown and an effort to peer deeper into the human psyche through which the book was both created and desired- be it from divine influence or an innate desire by man to try and order the world. What spiritual truths can be found I am not sure. I am not as compelled by the simplicity of needing to know what is right and wrong as I once was so that I now do not need or expect to find absolute truth. I now see life as a rope, consistent of a plethora of twine making the whole. Each individual twine represents a different element of self, none individually having the strength to hold the individual and none individually serving as the most or least essential- just a part of a great sum making the individual. To this end, I search for understanding of those individual and interwoven strings. Here is to the exploration.
