It is with great sadness that I would like to announce my resignation from volunteering at Melbourne Zoo :( Heres a chunk from my letter of resignation to help explain my decision: I have decided that I would no longer like to be a Melbourne Zoo Volunteer. I am very sad about my decision, but I feel that my volunteering has been for selfish reasons and it is no longer where I should be donating my time. I love being around animals, but I do not agree with some of Melbourne Zoos principals and I have been ignoring that for a long time. I in no way believe that Zoos Victoria are a bad organisation, I know that a lot of work is done to directly help with conservation and also to educate the public. However, I have been struggling with my feelings towards captive breeding of some of the animals, and I also feel that MZ has not always put the best interest of the animals as their highest priority lately (mostly because of Lemur Island). Like I said, I do not at all think that Melbourne Zoo is bad, but there are other projects where I feel like my donated time may be more valuable towards animal welfare and conservation. Also, I know that my attendance has not been the greatest because it is so difficult for me to get there (2 hours on public transport), and would like to find something a bit closer and more flexible. I am extremely upset but I feel like I have made the right decision. Working in Thailand with the elephants has strengthened my views on animal welfare, and this decision has been on my mind for weeks. For those of you that I volunteer with, I will miss you all very much! I still have about 6 months left on my membership so I will be dropping in at least 1 more time to drop off my uniform and check on my elephants. I hope you all can understand my decision!
