It is with great sadness that we heard about the passing of Hugh Huxley. He was a fantastic scientist who along with his colleagues proposed the sliding filament model of muscle contraction. He gave an iBioMagazine talk a few years ago, where he described how using a combination of X-ray images, phase contrast light microscopy and electron microscopy, he obtained the first definitive images showing that muscle was comprised of an interdigitating array of myosin and actin filaments that slid relative to each other during contraction.
