It makes me sad that this is necessary to post. Try harder, humanity. Please share this. A recent conversation with a friend... My friend: Actually it has made me realize that I have no voice as a person of color. And I can find little solidarity from those I have stood by on other issues. My experiences have been dismissed continually. I have been told over and over its the poor behavior of people that look like me as opposed to systemic racism. I have also been told that white privilege is not real. And worse this has come from white women quite frequently. Who are willing to accept male privilege exists and defend that a womans inability to walk down the street and not be harassed or raped is a problem with the system, not with her. But dont believe the same when it comes to people of color. Fuergeson has made me realize that my words fall on deaf ears. Which makes me want to run out into the streets and riot too. Me: Well, what little space I have in the world, I lend to you and your voice. Tell them what they need to hear. My friend: They need to hear that for every cockroach you see there are hundreds you dont. I am the daughter, sister and niece of police officers. I know how difficult the job can be. I know there are good men and woman that out themselves on the line everyday. But this incident is not isolated. Its not even rare. I have never been in trouble with the police. I have never been arrested. I always shows respect for police. That hasnt stopped them from pulling me over for no reason. The tailight that was out that wasnt. For making me explain what I was doing out so late in an affluent white neighborhood. They even went to the friends house later to verify and she promptly cursed them out and filed a report. Thats hasnt stopped them from making me prove that I own my car and then asking me questions about what I do for a living and how much it pays to afford that car. Hell it wasnt by cops but I was profiled in a store with you! This kind of crap happens all of the time. To people like me. To people like my brother who had his teeth knocked out by police before he eventually became one. If you cant beat them join them right? I need people to believe people of color when they tell these stories. Its not race baiting. Or trying to gain undersrved sympathy. People are rioting because no one is listening. Our wouldnt shouldnt be like this. I shouldnt find myself hoping my son looks white enough that he doesnt have to have these worries. It doesnt matter how well-behaved, well spoken or respectful I am when it is packaged in brown skin.
