"It means that the BC Mayors and City Councilors who make up the UBCM will be putting pressure on the BC provincial government to make BC a GE Free Zone. Technically, the resolution wording is strong as it asks for a ban on GE crops (which would include the GM apple) and GM animals (which would include the GM salmon). Figuratively, it’s even stronger. It demonstrates a shared and growing concern for the widespread presence of GMOs in our food supply and agriculture and for the potential risks to human and ecological health. The issue has only made it this far thanks to the passion and actions of concerned British Columbians - people who have spoken out in their communities, educated their politicians and in some cases successfully gotten regional GE Free resolutions to pass. There are currently 15 GE Free zones in BC to date. 10 communities have even built it into their official plans."
