It occurs to me that many might like to know the status of my dear - TopicsExpress

It occurs to me that many might like to know the status of my dear mother, who has proven to be somewhat of an energizer bunny. She is in a private house converted into an awesome care facility; The Golden Paradise Inn. As you may know, we didnt expect her to live to see May of 2013. We came up against circumstances where we needed to put a DNR in place, but with much trepidation. Dad was the decider. So with him in the car outside, I told him I would go inside to moms bedside to ask her if that decision was okay with her. She really hadnt communicated with any of us in any meaningful way in quite some time. I was hoping that I would be able to get through to her on this occasion...and I was. I explained the situation to her, and that unless she began to eat and drink, she would waste away and be gone in a few days....and that it was up to her to live. I also told her of our hospice decision cease all life-sustaining medications and to not resuscitate her. I then asked if that was what she wanted. She thought for a moment, gathered some strength, and nodded yes. From that moment forward, she began to slowly improve. She reached a plateau of semi-cognizance a while thereafter. But she was eventually removed from the hospice designation. We have been able to enjoy intermittent spells of awareness and even some simple conversation. She fights bladder and yeast infections constantly, but otherwise is in pretty good physical health....due to the fabulous personal care she is receiving.....thank you Angelica, Kim, Maribell, Ayesha, Bianca and the entire staff at GPI. Moms demeanor is ever sweet, controlled, happy and serene. The staff reports that she is a joy to serve, and its a pleasure to be in the company of Norma. A month ago, Jeff and Shirley returned from their Baltic States Mission. We had occasion where we all (Jeff, Grant, Todd, Becky, Dad) were able to spend time together with mom in her room. She seemed to really enjoy it. (Honestly, her favorite regular visitor seems to be my Jodie, who can illicit more response from mom than anyone else. But dont tell nobody.) Currently Dad still visits her almost daily on the bus from his Fig Garden Retirement facility. He is doing remarkably well, despite his near deafness and near blindness and breathtaking feebleness (I have quit trying to get him to use a walker). Hes truly an example of faithfully enduring to the end.
