It says in Hebrews 11:6 that “without faith it is impossible to please God.” Then again in Galatians 5:6, “the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love.” Oh, and yet again in Ephesians 2:8, “You are saved by grace through faith.” It would appear that a lot rests on this idea of “faith”, and in fact, a lot does. In this whole Gospel schematic, faith is the linchpin. If faith is absent then the Gospel is rendered powerless in a human life. Faith is the soul fuel upon which the Gospel spark kindles and sets aflame. We need a faith that isn’t missing its masculine emphasis – a faith that actually fixes what is broken, that is “willing to wage war” for what is right and is determined to conquer by the power of God. This isn’t a faith that embraces mountains but moves them. This isn’t a faith that wilts in the heat of the battle but wrestles until God’s deliverance is wrought in the earth. A faith more like the Jacob variety – that says, “this is what God said He would do, and so I’m going to wrestle in prayer until it becomes a reality.” Faith that includes the manly stuff gives God no escape route – but rather, holds God to His Word and says, “You promised!” Such a faith erupts with passion to remove the stigma of “contradiction” from being associated with the Name of God. It thunders, “God said it, and it will be done – I’ll stake my life on it!” Faith, in all its fullness, will persist, knock, beg, ask, wrestle until the realities of the Cross are fully evidenced in this natural world. - Eric
