It seems like Bakersfield Calif. is moving forward to the state capitol for auto racing. A friend up there posted this to me: Subject: Bakersfield Raceway Motorplex Check this out ! After the acquisition of 110 acres of property from Kern County, Randy Winkle along with John & Blake Bowser will be expanding Famoso Raceway essentially turning the Patch into a multi purpose facility . The following is just south behind the timing slip booth. The new additions will include a Championship Motocross track which is done and is backed by Lucas oil. The first race is scheduled to be had within weeks from now. A 300’ “Sand Drag” pit which is finished along with underground wiring going in, a new tower is also being constructed . The “Sand Pit” will also host Tractor Pulling & Monster truck events. I say “Sand Pit” as Randy had talked with one of the designers who had built these faculties and actually no sand will be used, dirt only as sand crates more dust & is abrasive. West of the Sand Drag pit is a new ¼ mile & 1/3 mile Sprint Car dirt oval which will have 4’ banks. As for now the existing dirt will be groomed to get input from racers and if need be clay may be brought in. Figure 8 and Destruction derby will also be held in the center of the track. Some of the grandstands are in at this time with more to come including covering over the seating. Fencing is already been installed to separate each facility along with a new tower to be built for the dirt oval. A new entrance road is also being groomed for the public. Eventually a lot of the property on the east side of the drag strip will be cleaned up from the now rotting nut hulls & citrus skins and other organic matter that has made Bako smell like hell the last few decades. The county wants this land cleaned up to use for the raceway. Once this property is reclaimed they intend to build a road coarse that will traverse much of the property making Bakersfield a huge multi purpose facility for everyone and everything that has wheels. Randy is also talking about building more rental shops on the west side of the pits next to his shops already there. These will be two story units that people can stay in with their shops below. The place is going to look a lot better as when we went out, all of the old overgrown grassy area west of the return road has been scraped & leveled off for the new facility’s.
