It took three albums and three years of touring full-time before I dared call myself a musician, or worse - artist, and even then, it was upon the insistence of others. A few days ago I found the files of the journals I kept when I first quit my day-job and moved to Berlin. I am so glad I kept them. I struggled so immensely with the question of whether I had the right to live this way, whether I could somehow fight it and live normally, whether my motivations were ethical and pure. At this moment, between gigs, working on new projects I cant wait to share with you, I am struck anew by two things: first, that this was totally inevitable, and second, that if it wasnt for the rallying support and generosity of my inspiring friends, family, and talented colleagues, Id still be a mess of a human being, (which admittedly, I still feel I am sometimes, but its different now). I have come a long way since those journal entries, on significant personal and professional levels, and still, Ive got miles to go, but I couldnt have done any of it without you, and I wouldnt trade this life for the world. I am a musician and artist, goddammit!
