It was first called The Church Throughout (universal) and would become to be known a Catholic from the Greek translation. Catholic Church in the Bible The earliest evidence of the use of the term Catholic Church is the Letter to the Smyrnaeans that Ignatius of Antioch wrote in about 107 to Christians in Smyrna. Exhorting Christians to remain closely united with their bishop, he wrote: “Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” Numerous other early writers including Cyril of Jerusalem (c. 315–386), Augustine of Hippo (354–430) and others further developed the use of the term “catholic” in relation to Christianity. The Catholic Church is mentioned in Acts 9 in the Greek (Koine)....Ekklesia Romano Katolikoos...Catholic Church...and Catholic, or catholic, means universal in that Greek. Thus, the Catholic Church is mentioned in the NT--again, Acts 9...before it was called Christian in Acts 11. The Catholics gathered the NT writings, complied them with the Septuagint, and canonized the First Bible...the original Bible...the Catholic Bible by 397 AD...and the Septuagint, aka, the Alexandrian Hebrew Bible, is what Christ and the Apostles quoted from and taught from.... every NT Book was chosen because it comported with Catholic teachings. The term katholikos is equivalent to καθόλου (katholou), a contraction of the phrase καθ ὅλου (kath holou) meaning according to the whole. Thus the full name Catholic Church roughly means universal or whole church. Ekklesia is used multiple times throughout the New Testament and it does refer to the institution which Christ established, and often it is referred to as being Catholic. See below… LUKE 4:14 ” .. ACTS 10:37 ”Hemeis oidate ho genomenon rhema KATH’OLES“ ΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ ΤΩΝ ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΩΝ 10:37ὑμεῖς οἴδατε τὸ γενόμενον ῥῆμα καθ’ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας, [a]ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας μετὰ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐκήρυξεν Ἰωάννης, ACTS 4:18 ”Kai kelasantes autos pareggeilan to KATH’OLOU ACTS 4:18καὶ καλέσαντες αὐτοὺς παρήγγειλαν [a]τὸ καθόλου μὴ φθέγγεσθαι μηδὲ διδάσκειν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ. Act 9:31 Αἱ μὲν οὖν ἐκκλησία καθ᾿ ὅλης τῆς ᾿Ιουδαίας καὶ Γαλιλαίας καὶ Σαμαρείας εἶχον εἰρήνην οἰκοδομούμεναι καὶ πορευόμεναι τῷ φόβῳ τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ τῇ παρακλήσει τοῦ ῾Αγίου Πνεύματος ἐπληθύνοντο. ACTS 9:31 ”He men oun EKKLESIA KATH’OLES …” – the Church is called “CHURCH THROUGH OUT” in Greek, “EKKLESIA KATH’OLES” (KATA + HOLOS = KATHOLIKOS).
