It was in that climate Cristo found himself, in costume and in his own time zone. He had been embraced by thousands of Mexican sailors, surrounded by hundreds of vessels prepared to cross the seas wherever he would lead them, when the church arrived. Three Catholic Priests in costume too, approached Cristo’s merriment on board his ship while hosting a beggar’s banquet of tequila, wine and barbequed pork. As the three priests parted the crowd and silenced the music, Cristo bowed to them as they boarded the ship. Everybody was in costume, it was a day to remember and the Catholic Church was going to have their moment with him. In Spanish the local Catholic Bishop surrounded by his entourage, put out his hand as Cristo knelt and kissed it, as he spoke the Bishop said, “Que Dios bendiga su viaje y que usted y sus naves a salvo.” (May god keep your voyage and you safe from harm). And then, the Bishop turned to allow two strong men to bring forward a very old treasure chest with a very special hand made lock. Cristo and Diego recognized the old treasure chest immediately, as if the universe had opened for them. The Bishop turned back to Cristo and said, “I believe this belongs to you.” The Bishop and priests stepped back as the crowd became silent. Cristo looked at Diego, they were breathless. The chest had not been opened for five hundred years, and had found its way under the protection of the church back to its rightful owners. Hesitating only slightly, Cristo reached into his pocket and took out the little metal fish with the purple eye, turned it around and inserted the tail into the lock. It clicked open and the secrets of the world were unlocked again. A cheer let out so loud the heavens could hear it, as tears of joy poured out of everyone, including the Bishop and his priests. Cristo embraced Diego as his son whispered into Cristo’s ear, “I remember when you stole that from the Buddha”…
