It was sometime in June, 2004. Half an hour into the flight from Heathrow, I was awaken by the polite barking of a seasoned man seating next. “I am flying to an independent Bangladesh and how dare you do not have any Bangla song on board? ... You expect to keep me tamed with nonsense Bollywood bully? ... This is a violation of convention.” An exotically charming stewardess and the purser of British Airways (BA 143) were standing by the aisle; heads down, embarrassed and apologetic. Having no idea who he was, soon after that drama, I curiously asked, “Are you a big fish, Sir?” He promptly replied, “I am a simple man with solid backbone.” That woke me up. In the next 12 months, we (along with a Nepalese colleague named Ashutosh Tiwari) sent signed letters to every international airlines that operates in and out of Bangladesh, asking to carry Bengali music in its on board audio system. As reality kicked in, never got to measure the impact of that campaign. However, that barking on board woke me up. Many thanks Mr. Chashi Nazrul Islam. You are an inspiration. You will be missed. Truly.
