It will be interesting--and telling--to see the outcome of this indictment. The charges are not trifling: felony abuse of power and felony coercion of a public official, carrying a minimum 5-year prison sentence. The link below has a good summary of the unfolding story. If you havent heard, Rick Perry has been formally charged with using his position as governor of Texas to threaten, harass, and force the resignation of a District Attorney in his state. Some relevant points: -the DA in question was actively investigating allegations of corruption within Perrys administration -the DA is a Democrat -the rationale behind Perrys leveraging of millions of dollars in state funds toward the removal of this DA from office is that the DA was convicted of a DUI while serving office. However, during Perrys term, three other state officials have also been convicted of DUI charges while serving--two DAs, and one chief legal counsel--all of whom were never pressured to resign. (All of whom were also Republicans.) Perrys defense thus far has been interesting: he does not at all deny trying to coerce the DA currently investigating his administration into resigning. He admits that that is EXACTLY what he meant to do. His defense is simply that, as governor of Texas, he can do what he wants. Now, is there any chance in hell that Perry will serve a day of jail time for these charges, on the off chance that he is convicted? Never. Two reasons: 1) he is rich, white, very well-connected, and a party hero. 2) the moment hes sentenced and is stripped of governorship, the new governor will step in and pardon him. Even if Perry becomes a toxic asset and is allowed to stay in prison for a while, there is no possibility of him serving the full term: he will be pardoned, sooner rather than later. Watch this case unfold, folks, and see the reality of the judicial system in America.
