KySTE 2015, the conference of the Kentucky Society for Technology in Education, invites you to attend its annual spring conference in Louisville March 4-6. There will be sessions on a variety of important education technology trends and tools, including: • TBT – Old technology-inspired resources for the classroom • SharePoint Online, and other Office365 tools • Social Media (Facebook, Pinterest, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.) tools and helps, for newbies and veterans • Software Deployment, Device Management, and other tools for the technician • Games, Simulations, Coding Resources • Instant classroom feedback tools and hardware…and many more! Early bird pricing expires February 16. “Dream Out Loud Challenge” Kentucky students in grades K-6 have the opportunity to win $1,500 toward college and $500 for their school in the “Dream Out Loud Challenge.” Students are invited to submit an original drawing, poem, essay or video answering the question: “How will I change the world after I go to college?” The contest has two categories: drawing or video and essay or poem. One winner will be chosen from each category in grades K-1, grades 2-3 and grades 4-6. The winning students will receive a $1,500 KESPT college savings account, and their schools will win $500. The contest runs from January 19 through March 20. Entries must be postmarked by March 20 and received by March 25. The annual challenge, sponsored by the Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust (KESPT), is intended to encourage Kentucky families to start saving and planning for higher education with their children. PIMSER offers mathematics professional learning for spring and summer 2015 PIMSER – the Partnership Institute for Math and Science Education Reform is sponsoring a series of spring and summer workshops for educators. Opportunities are available for teachers at every grade level – as well as administrators. Click on the workshop titles below for complete descriptions, dates and registration, or go to the PIMSER website for more information. • Creating an Effective Mathematics Classroom (Grades 6-12) Learn how to set up a mathematics classroom to engage your students, techniques for fostering math talk and instructional strategies that bring mathematics alive. • Using Multiple Representations for a Better Understanding of Calculus A course designed for new Calculus teachers in the process of developing or refocusing an AP or dual credit course in Calculus. • Whole School Mathematics Program at a Glance Educational leaders are invited to explore tools designed to determine the extent of implementation of the Common Core Mathematic Standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice within the whole school mathematics program. • Operation: Math Basics (Grades K-5) This game-based program demonstrates foundational strategies for students that they can quickly master, showing them that they can be successful at math. • Short Courses - Using the Number Line (Grades K-12) Strengthen understanding of the KCAS mathematics content standards and Standards for Mathematical Practice while experiencing activities as a learner. • Interweaving the Standards for Mathematical Practice into the Classroom (Grades K-12) Gain a better understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice while learning instructional strategies that will engage students and develop the level of expertise indicated in these standards. History conference call for proposals A call for proposals is currently being made for educator presentations at the annual Kentucky History Education Conference, which will be held on Thursday, July 9, at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort. This year’s conference will be based on the 2015-16 National History Day theme, Exploration, Encounter and Exchange in History. We encourage any educators that may have innovative classroom practices (especially involving primary sources) to submit a proposal to present and share their ideas. If you feel you have a lesson or activity that would benefit other history teachers and would like to participate, please e-mail a short abstract (up to 200 words) and your resume to [email protected] by April 10. We will notify those that are selected by May 1. Accepted presenters will have their conference registration fee waived and lunch provided. Judges sought for National History Day Kentucky Do you want to see students excited about history? Do you want to help them develop as learners? National History Day Kentucky (NHDKy) is looking for judges for our district and state contests. Every year, NHDKy serves nearly 3,000 students with this program. Students choose between exhibits, papers, websites, documentaries, and performances on a historical topic related to the overall NHD theme. With eight regional contests throughout the state, and the state competition held at the University of Kentucky this year, NHDKy needs both experienced and new judges for the competitions. Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color Award nominations open We are pleased to announce the launch of the process to select the 2015 COSEBOC School Award winners, preK-6th grade schools that are consistently successful in educating their boys of color. Guidelines and the application for the 2015 COSEBOC School Awards is now available at coseboc.org/school-awards. COSEBOC School Award-winning schools will receive a $10,000 unrestricted grant and their promising practices will be featured at our next Gathering of Leaders, April 22-24 in Memphis, Tennessee.
