Ithaca, August 6th, 2013 – At tonight’s Tompkins County Legislature meeting, Candidate for the TC Legislature, Mike Sigler, from the Town of Lansing, introduced a resolution to convert the Cayuga Power Plant to natural gas. This is the first resolution calling on the legislature to support the conversion and keep the plant open. Sigler said, “This is the top agenda item for so many voters in Lansing; it was time someone came forward with a resolution the Legislature could get behind.” This is a mirror to the resolution that passed the town board in July. “I didn’t think we had to reinvent the wheel. This resolution received bipartisan support at the town level and I expect it to garner bipartisan support at the county legislature,” said Sigler. The power plant is the largest taxpayer in Lansing and the recent meeting at the Lansing Middle School brought in more than 800 people. “I’ve never seen that many people at a meeting for anything in the county. Keeping the plant open, converting it to natural gas, has the support of the schools, unions, Lansing taxpayers and local officials. It’s time to get the county on the record.” Sigler has supported the repowering of the plant with natural gas since he announced his candidacy. “I talked to a lot of residents and continue to do that; there are very few people in the town who don’t want this repowering.” RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE CAYUGA POWER PLANT CONVERT TO NATURAL GAS The following resolution was duly presented for consideration to the Tompkins County Legislature WHEREAS, the Cayuga Power Plant, located in Lansing, New York is considering repowering the plant using a source of fuel other than coal (repowering proposal 12 E-0577); and WHEREAS, The Public Service Corporation suggested repowering the plant using natural gas in order to provide between 150 and 300 megawatts to be used to supplement electric needs at time of high demand; and WHEREAS, ensuring the ongoing operation of the Cayuga Operating Plant which will protect our property taxpayers, while retaining good jobs; and WHEREAS, upon due deliberation thereupon, the Tompkins County Legislature has RESOLVED, that the Tompkins County Legislature does hereby fully support the proposal to repower the coal-powered Cayuga Power Plant in the Town of Lansing to natural gas.
