Its All I Had (HCC) 9-29-14 Its all I had when I checked to see what was left After the exodus, the travel, and all the rest When my hands were done with the shoveling of all the death Prayed my prayers and purged all I had to confess And hammered stones to dust as I carved out my soul upon them If for nothing else so another might find their way inside them For I was blinded by it all it seems The repackaged hopes and seconds hand dreams The preconceived notions and force fed devotions Even the limits of words that could be spoken Then when it all faded away And their words and ideas I could no longer say There was nothing left but to look inside of me And saw a chain that kept hold a lonesome key From there, my heart, I drew forth the well of ink And words fell out of a pen scrolled as fast as I could think Each an altar and a grave stone Each in a melodic and measured tone And lost I was, where I was found Lifted up, though my feet fastened firmly to the profound Accusations fly as they may Oh, they will lose their breath one day As mouths hang open Despite all their hoping And those who never knew And those who held true Shall see the collage of broken glass Where the future meets the intention of the past When some will rejoice when others might be sad To see what I was left and its all ever had.
