Its Freebie Friday and today Im introducing you to Stant Litore, author of The Zombie Bible series. This week he released I WILL HOLD MY DEATH, a short story based on the book of Judges. And it has zombies. Ill let you wallow in that awesomeness for a moment. In I WILL HOLD MY DEATH CLOSE, we are thrust into the desert the Jews wandered in their exile, a harsh land filled with the moaning dead. A young woman fights for her life not only from the monsters who mindlessly seek her flesh, but her own father who has vowed to offer her as a sacrifice to his god, Yah. This is the third work of Stant’s that Ive read. The first two were his short stories Anisible 15715 and Anisible 15716. With each piece my soul is stripped a little bare and raw. The despair, loneliness and desperation his characters face resonate deep within me. While I confess that my reading tastes fall more to genre, I find myself riveted to Stants prose, not only because I’m eager find out the characters’ fate but because his words are so beautiful. “I glide along the knife’s edge of my fear, the exhilaration of being alive, *still* alive, lifting me the way the god’s unseen hands lift a bird into the sky. The small sound of my tears hitting the dead flesh beneath me. The rasping of my breath in my throat.” While “zombies” are part of this story, like The Walking Dead, the focus is much more on the will and determination of the characters. In this book, the character fights not only live, but to choose the time of her death. “The night is sharp. I hold my death close; it is my own, and these unsteady corpses will not take it from me.” I WILL HOLD MY DEATH CLOSE is a beautiful story that has stayed with me days after reading it. I highly recommend.
