Its International Youth Day today. And this years theme, Mental Health Matters, couldnt have been more apt, especially when one views it on the heels of President Jonathans description of the late American-Liberian human Ebola pipeline to Nigeria, Patrick Sawyer, as a mad man. But that aside, the Mental Health question by far transcends the commonality of street madness & rampant cases of schizophrenia that greets one on the average Nigerian streets. No, it certainly goes farther than that; it encompasses the MENTAL MODEL that dictates our day to day activities & endeavours. For with the appropriate mental model, Nigerian youths can activate a new socio-economic & political dynamic that can automatically shift the nations power equation tendentiously in their favour. For instance, the youths constitute over 60% of Nigerias voting demography; in other words, the youths can decide who wins elections across the country, beginning from the Ward Councillors to the President. Again, we are told, & it is true, that, corruption is the bane of Nigerias development. And it is equally true that demons dont come from hell to execute corruption; it is men that orchestrate corruption. So, the youths can embark on a nationwide protest to sweep the nation clean of the corrupt & end the feast of maggots that politics has become in this nation, in order to set the nation firmly on the path to transformation in its truest terms. Yes, its doable, if only the mental model is right & appropriate. So, as we celebrate this day, it is important we spare a thought for the things we can do together for our nation, if we are to qualify to be called, NIGERIAN YOUTHS. So help us God!!!
