Its Only A Mediocre Play (with big names)...theatre review by Elizabeth Vincentelli )- Thank heavens for Nathan Lane, an alchemist who turns comic lead into gold. And hes been handed a lot of lead in Its Only A Play. Terrence McNallys 1980s backstage romp has been spruced up with contemporary zings, but quips about James Franco & Alec Baldwin cant hide its creaky bones. Blah blah blah for 3-4 paragraphs, then: Aside from Matthew Broderick-- who looks and moves as if hes embalmed-- the cast works overtime. Megan Mullally and Nathan Lane alone are almost worth the price of admission with a sense of timing thats a thing of wonder. As for the rest? Its barely a play.
