Its Thanksgiving today, and we want to individually thank our friends/teachers/mentors, Vern and Jan Kagarice... We owe them both so much, words cannot even describe it. In order of the Maniacs (Maniacal 4 comes from the first two letters of our first names... Which was Jans idea of course). Please take the time to Carls, as he gives some extra insight into how the arrangement came to be... MAtt: I am so very thankful for Jan and Verns influence on my life... My relationship with them began as a student where I received private lessons, Maniacal 4 coachings, trombone choir rehearsals, excerpt classes, etc. When I was younger, they seemed so opposite... Practically contradicting each other with the advice that they gave, Jan being so extroverted, Vern incredibly calm and unflappable... As I got older, I grew to see that they werent opposites at all, they were simply balanced... One the perfect compliment to the other. Although I continue to remember their lessons every day, I am lucky enough to now call them friends. I love you Vern, and miss you very much. Jan, words cant describe how much youve helped me grow as a musician and a person. I love you with my whole heart. NIck: Thank you so much to Jan and Vern Kagarice, who helped and guided me on a path of great self discovery. I am forever grateful for the lessons learned, and for shaping me into the person I am today. Vern - I will carry you with me forever. Your profound and caring influence continues. Jan - you have a big piece of my heart, and I will love you forever. Thank you for the amazing gift you gave us all. lrAC (or Carl): Vern was selfless, loving, and patiently kind. He was always there for us, with an absolute gem of advice and a grin on his face. Jan, the fiery and impassioned flip side of his coin, has always tirelessly thrown herself into the music, pushing us further with every hour. Thank you both for never hesitating to do the right thing, and for always seeing more in us than we could understand. In 2010, Vern gave me a thin scrap of paper with a melody and a few chord symbols on it. He had received it some years ago from J-L Maciel and Gilberto Gagliardi, who had co-written this melody, Janet. Underneath the title it read “Dedicated to Janet Kagarice, who plays and sings beautifully.” Vern had intended to finish the arrangement, but ever thinking of his students, instead thought it would be a nice opportunity for me. For several years I hesitated, for fear of ruining a special piece of music…our plan was to surprise Jan with it. Vern never got to hear this completed piece - nonetheless it’s from him, lovingly, to Jan. Being fortunate enough to have known him is a great joy in my life. Jan, I look forward to many more years to come. Vern, thank you for everything. You are deeply missed, but the love you’ve passed on to the world is stronger than ever! ALex: I first met Vern and Jan at one of the Leon Brown trombone days at UNT. It was a whole day of trombone choir rehearsals and concerts for trombone students from local high schools. I attended two of those events back in high school and remember Vern and Jan playing a duet piece together. I ended up studying at UNT with both of them. I had Vern and Jan for quartet, and Vern for lessons. I learned a lot about what it takes to be a musician and not just a trombone player from both of them. As a private instructor, a lot of what I tell my students is what I learned from Vern and Jan. I am thankful for all of their hard work and extra time they put into helping our quartet especially to be the best we could be. Thank you Vern and Jan! I love you both! https://youtube/watch?v=E-ZNV1UHBB4&list=UUMnRwt8QSjC79jsf4OdCcJg
