Its been said that the snow melts in your hands yes it does... It melts in a pot... Yes it does... But what is happening is your putting the flame straight on the snow... The snow is at its solid state it doesnt go to its liquid state because the flame being put right on the solid state makes it go straight to the gas state which means its evaporating before it has the chance to get it to the melting state... The smell is the snow at its solid state collecting fumes from the lighters or the sulfur from a match the black is the soot that anything burns puts off lighter fluid sulfur.. The snow hasnt melted because it hasnt been warm enough to melt outside or warm long enough we have pretty much stayed in the single digets... I used a match also n it does the same but the further away from the fire it drips all down my arm.. Yes there are chemicals in the snow there always has been since we as the people cant live without our factories n cars that pollute our air...
