Its coming up to New Year and i started to think of my early life - TopicsExpress

Its coming up to New Year and i started to think of my early life in Burton. No 2 Milton Street was were I lived with mum and dad. Dont remember much about mum, she died when i was 5. I played in the streets of Burton with Hughie Lee and Stanley Morgan, sometimes venturing to the Piggy Market (where I stood on a nail and ended up at the hospital) and to the Cherry Orchard and Ox Hay. We sometimes went to Saturday morning pictures at the Gaumont in High Street. We stood on the level crossing gates and watched the red Basses steam engines chuff by. Just before Xmas, the children of one parent families were invited to a party at the Town Hall, (not so many one parent families in those days). I used to go with Hughie Lee, we ate sandwiches, jelly and cakes while a magician did tricks and a clown performed. At the party end we were given a carrier bag that contained a orange, apple, dates and a small toy and then me and Hughie walked home. Our milk was delivered by horse and cart and the rag and bone man used to shout Goldfish and oranges for wool. My breakfast was either bread and jam or bits of bread with warm milk poured over it. Happy days, an apple was what you eat to keep the doctor away (not a phone service) and a tablet was what the doctor gave you when you were poorly. We left Milton Street in 1952 and lived in Stapenhill..... But thats another story... Thanks
