Its easy to say this kind of terrible thing is what other people - TopicsExpress

Its easy to say this kind of terrible thing is what other people do - *those foreigners with their wrong beliefs* -- in this case, Pakistani Muslims. Easy to point to stories of humans dehumanizing other humans, in other countries, because *we dont do it that way, here -- were better than that*. Easy to feel our ways have been defiled when people come to our country and practice their ways in our homeland. Easy to mark *those people* as evil. For most of human history, all over the world, slavery has been acceptable. America only abolished slavery about 150 years ago - which only about 2 avg life spans. And in America, the bible has been used to justify slavery... and even some churches owned plantations. Whether its religious belief, culture, privilege, or a general sense of superiority and entitlement -- people will find some way to justify dehumanizing other human beings. Today, people think of slaveholders/traders of old, as evil because most people think slavery and all that goes with it are evil acts. I seriously doubt this couple ever thought of themselves as evil. Our founding fathers owned slaves. Pretty sure they didnt think of themselves as evil either. People dont think of themselves as evil. All modern *slaves* arent just the ones weve heard about that are forced into prostitution. Slavery, dehumanization in modern times isnt always a thing people need to use their culture and religion to justify. Dont know about the UK but Ive read stories like the one attached about rich people, right here in the USA, and the immigrants they had, practically imprisoned -- working in their homes, for less than $1 to nothing, an hour. Some of those slaves were children too. But, not all *slave owners* in the America today, are Muslim, or even particularly religious. For the most part, what sets them apart from you and I, is money. Slavery has been legally abolished but its far dead: Global Slavery Index: From forced labour on cannabis farms in the UK to the child workers in the cocoa industry of Côte d’Ivoire, an estimated 29.8 million people are enslaved today. The Global Slavery Index is your guide to modern slavery, country by country. globalslaveryindex.org/report/ I certainly agree, slavery is wrong. Dehumanizing people is wrong. This couple got off easy. People with money can afford *better* justice. For rich people, fines and probation isnt much more than an inconvenient slap on the wrist. I think the punishment for this kind of crime should be comparable to kidnapping. People found guilty should do time -- 5 to 10 years, at least -- and in a regular prison, not a white collar style, time out facility. mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/deaf-mute-girl-treated-slave-4444800
