Its funny to see minds blown with what I as a UU take for granted. Tonight I was downtown for a church meeting and totally forgot that art walk was happening. Outside of the church, on our lawn, was a booth for the I.E. Atheists and Agnostics. Two of my friends--and fellow church members--are leaders of the group. I havent seen them for a couple of weeks, so we excitedly chat and catch up in front of the booth. Now, in the 20 or so minutes that I was standing there, I witnessed a LOT of shocked and/or offended looks towards the booth. The lady who was tabling next to them was clearly trying to keep her distance and dissociate her business from theirs. My friend said that some of the people are like WTF because they, their atheist group, are in front of a church. She says they cheerfully tell those people that the church happily gave them permission to use the space. We wondered if the churchs approval gives them some sort of legitimacy in the eyes of some people or if it just lowers our UU reputation even lower than some already ascribe to us ;) I kinda hope that people were looking at us laughing and smiling and wondering what evil we were planning, because we were actually talking about bargain dress shopping, local baseball games and dog diets. The atheist agenda is way more boring than youd imagine. LOL
