Its interesting how it has become acceptable for black athletes to be vocal about winning and being the best at their sport or even supporting their college and teams in tough times. But its not okay for black athletes to take a stand for justice. As long as the players stay in their lane as players, they are accepted into the world of college and professional sports as heroes. They can take on causes that affect everyone like Cancer and autism BUT should they speak on issues in the communities they grew up in or stand up for people that look like them? Absolutely not. American is telling us they should be just be quiet and play ball. Even some of their community would say be quiet this is your chance. Chance for what? To cross over, to be accepted by a world that gives you pass as long as you _________. Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith, John Carlos, Saint Louis Rams and now #AriyanaSmith are examples of athletes who have the courage to act within and then beyond their circumstance to prove that black athletes are more than just the spectacle that their body creates. They have intelligent minds and understand their rights to free speech and the importance of not being silent about injustice. From simple gestures to large scale civil disobedience I am inspired by the moral courage shown by those who use their moment in the spotlight to make a statement. Thank you. #justicerequiresaction #blacklivesmatter #blackathletesareblackpeople
