Its interesting to see what consumers and people that dont have a clue think when they see calf hutches. For most dairy farmers its a great way to keep their calves healthy, warm, dry and happy, there is plenty of light as well as fresh air. They have access to outside in the summer and are warm and dry in the winter. (-40 or -50 Celsius in the winter sometimes in Canada). I have also experienced dairy calves in New Zealand, out in the pasture in the NZ winter, and while it wasnt snowing, it was often cold & rainy and they were often wet, damp which in turn sometimes made them sick. So perhaps a bit more information for consumers might be a great idea! What works best on your farm for your calves? We would love to hear!
