Its just that a city that never liked to show off is flaunting its hidden wealth. An ongoing study at the Indian Statistical Institute has revealed that Kolkata has the highest per capita purchasing power among all metros, a function of small population and low poverty in 141 municipal wards in the core of the city, largely a preserve of families living there for generations. That purchasing power is creating a voracious consumer force and recasting the electoral dynamic of the city Damayanti Datta, Deputy Editor, INDIA TODAY , in its issue dt. April 28th. Well, well ! Wonders will never cease ! It makes you wonder whether the conventional paradigm of development is balanced by an opposite narrative of wealth accretion despite or because of growth stagnation and population flight.
