Its my deep held belief that Scotland needs independence. After - TopicsExpress

Its my deep held belief that Scotland needs independence. After the atrocities of World War 2, the people of Scotland, England and Wider Europe adopted a culture of compassion and solidarity, with the creation of the welfare state and the European Union. These values are sadly corroding under westminster rule! Starting with Maggie the milk snatcher Thatcher, who created a ruthless individualist culture There is no such thing as society her famous catchphrase and the illegal labour wars of Tony Blairs labour. We now have another austerity driven Tory party in charge, which gives tax cuts to the most wealthy and creates a culture of benefits blame in our society, a rudderless Labour party, with an identity crisis - not knowing if it wants to be be Tory or Labour and the rising influence of UKIP, who prey on peoples biggest insecurities to develop racist policies! In simple terms, what this referendum really boils down to is whether you want to be governed by Hollyrood or Westminster? I dont live an idealistic fantasy, where we will have a perfect Hollyrood government after a yes vote, because we dont live in a perfect world! If we get Independence, undoubtably there will be policies which you, me and our friends will disagree with! What we do have however, is an able bodied Government which is at least fighting to retain some of the spirit which was created after the War. If youre a student in this country you dont have to pay tuition fees, if youre ill you dont have to pay prescription charges, if you are a home owner your council tax payments were frozen! Scotland now has a decision to make, a challenge of the status quo that has stagnated our progress. In littler over 300 years since the Union 1707, there has hardly been any noises about Independence, at least none that have been taken very seriously. The very fact that we have this referendum highlights the diverging beliefs of our nation, with a political conscience which is becoming more and more strained by Westminsters right wing politics! If we take this opportunity maybe, just maybe we can all pull together and fight for a more equal society! This is my major hope for Scotland if we get Independence. There is a lot of different views which are going about in this debate and whether youre a yes or no voter we can all agree that we want what is best for our Country. For me the decision is simple however, the government at Hollyrood gives us a greater opportunity to achieve this! Ive also heard a lot of nonsense about currency and economics in the lead up to the referendum, businesses will up and leave for example. Maybe there is an element of truth in this, exaggerated to the limits of political rhetoric. But ask yourself this. If you were a business owner, with so much of your income based on the respect and trust that you have built up with your customers would you risk leaving and starting again, trying to build up your business in another country just because the country has decided to become independent? If I was giving you £50,000 a year for your wonderful services, which I am greatly benefiting from, would I stop giving you this money because you decided to split from your wife? That might seem like a ridiculous analogy, but thats the logic of the situation! The better together campaign use these business stories to highlight the risk of an independent Scotland, but what are the risks for businesses abandoning their customers because the country decided, in a democratic process to become an independent country? I talk to friends regularly who have great ability, intelligence and creative talents. I meet strangers of the same ilk on a daily basis. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we can govern ourself and be a successful and prosperous country. This is the country after all that modernised the world with its inventions, engineering and created some of the most enlightened thinkers that have walked the earth. Sadly however, we are weighed down by a rather self deprecating belief of ourself. Maybe we can challenge this by making our own decisions. Maybe we can see Scotland prosper under a fairer government. Maybe Scotland can finally come out of its infancy and move into maturity. Grown ups govern themselves! Intelligent people govern themselves! WE CAN GOVERN OURSELVES! Thank you!
