Its my own fault really. Our schedules are so jam-packed that we often race from one activity to the next: eating drive-thru food in the car, changing uniforms on the fly and always, always mindful of the time left until the next event. Today I was getting slightly frustrated that my kids would race to the end of the trail and ask, Whats next? I realized that mindfulness and paying attention are learned behaviors. I changed the tone of our adventure when I started asking them to notice things--things like the changes in temperature, the plants, the rock formations and what one another found most interesting. Its a good day when I can be reminded of whats important and I can teach my kids a skill they will need the rest of their lives.
