Its not often in Tulsa that you get to see a modern classic of theater, performed in an intimate setting by a cast that is positively roaring in its command of the stage. Thats what I witnessed Thursday with the opening night performance by Theatre Pops of the Tony-winning August: Osage County. The first impression is the enormity and complexity of the specially crafted set in such a small theater space. Then the lights dim and go back up as the cast, actor by actor, completely inhabits each character (and there are many) as their own lives for the remainder of the evening, supported by a tech crew at the top of its game. This production began coming together back in July and the months of hard work blossom in the seamless ebb and flow of passions. Believe me, if you saw the movie version with Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, et al, you have NOT felt the impact this story can have on its audience. If you didnt see that movie, good! This show was written for the breathing, laughing, raging, sizzling stage, not a medium-cool film screen. Stephanie and I are extremely proud to have played a small role in helping Theatre Pops bring this powerful play to Tulsa. Come see the results for yourself. It will stick with you long past your trip home.
