Its the birthday of Albert Sabin, born this day in Bialystok, Poland in 1906. However, he was born of Jewish parents and his birth surname was Saperstein. The family immigrated to the United States in 1921 and he changed it to Sabin when he became a naturalized citizen in 1930. Sabin was studying medicine at New York University and began exploring in the field of poliomyelitis. He continued the study when he went to the University of Cincinnati where Sabin proved that the polio virus entered the body not through the respiratory system as had been believed, but through the digestive tract. Upon making that discovery, Sabin turned his attention to making an oral polio vaccine with a weakened live virus. The vaccine was approved in 1960 and many of the baby boomer generation were among the first to take the oral vaccine through the public school system.
